Overview
of the Transportation Cost Reduction Techniques Seminar
Leading edge firms are using some long standing supply chain tools in
unique ways to drive down transportation costs. Specific examples
covered included:
-Network optimization, which is now at the highest level of corporate
interest ever and has migrated from a long term strategic application to
short term tactical use
-Packaging optimization, which has garnered
tremendous traction after Wal-Mart identified $10 billion saving in
supply chain costs from a 5% reduction in packaging
-Reverse
auctions, which are used by many large firms such as Kraft, ConAgra,
Nestle, General Electric, and Dupont, as a regular part of securing
transport service and pricing have now been extended into teaming and
collaborative efforts
-Truck technology, which is being used in new
combinations to increase fuel efficiency by as much as 25%, and
emissions reduction
